Most event vendors are professionals who deliver exactly what they promise. But scams happen, and knowing the red flags saves you from a potential disaster.
1. No Contract or Vague Terms
A professional vendor always provides a written contract with specific deliverables, dates, times, and payment terms. If they resist putting it in writing, walk away.
2. Cash-Only Payments
Legitimate businesses accept credit cards and have payment processing. Cash-only requests often indicate they're operating without proper business licenses — and you'll have no payment trail if something goes wrong.
3. No Portfolio or References
Every experienced vendor has photos, videos, or testimonials from past events. If they can't show you any work, they either just started or have unhappy clients they're hiding.
4. Prices Too Good to Be True
If a DJ quotes $100 for a 4-hour wedding when the market rate is $800-1,500, something is wrong. Either they'll no-show, underdeliver, or add hidden fees later.
5. Demands Full Payment Upfront
Industry standard: 50% deposit to book, 50% on/after event day. A vendor demanding 100% upfront gives themselves no incentive to show up.
6. No Insurance
Professional vendors carry general liability insurance. If they don't, you're personally liable for anything that goes wrong at your event involving their services or equipment.
7. Can't Provide a Business License
Every legitimate vendor has a business license for their operating city. No license = no accountability.
8. Poor Communication
If they take 5+ days to respond during the sales process, imagine how they'll be when you need last-minute changes the week before your event.

What happens if they get sick? Equipment fails? Professional vendors have backup DJs, spare cameras, and contingency plans. Ask about theirs.
